Vietnam Veterans Day Commemoration
The Quaker Meadows Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will host the Vietnam Veterans Day Commemoration on the lawn at the historic Burke County Courthouse at 11 a.m. In the case of inclement weather, activities will be held inside the building in the old courtroom upstairs. There is an elevator available.
Fish fry and gospel singing
Shiloh AME Church, 1323 N. Powerhouse Road, ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥, will hold a fish fry and gospel singing event for Women’s Day at the Julius Moore Building across from the church. Get a fish or hot dog plate (including baked beans, slaw, drink and dessert) for $12 or a fish sandwich for $8. The dinner is sponsored by Shiloh’s men. The gospel singing will feature 4ever Faithful, The Wilson Family and Morning Star Choir from Hickory. All proceeds will benefit the Women’s Day program.

Women’s Day
Shiloh AME Church, 1323 N. Powerhouse Road, ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥, will celebrate Women’s Day during its 11 a.m. worship service. The Rev. Wanda L. Howell, who pastored several churches in the western North Carolina Conference before retiring, will be the guest preacher. She is currently an associate pastor at Shiloh. Special music will be provided by the Shiloh Gospel Choir.

Burke County Public Schools, Burke County Sheriff's Office and the Burke County Children's Advocacy Center of Southmountain Children and Family Services are hosting a free event about online safety and cybersecurity at Patton High School, 701 Enola Road, ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥, at 6 p.m. Learn from experts in the BCPS technology department as well as law enforcement and child advocacy on keeping your children safe while on computers, phones, gaming devices and more. Some of the topics may not be suitable for little ears.

Smart Start meeting
Burke County Smart Start’s board of directors meeting will be held at 4 p.m. at the Partnership offices, 304 W. Union St., ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥. Board meetings are open to the public and are held in handicapped accessible facilities. COVID, flu and other health restrictions will be observed. NAACP meeting
The Burke County NAACP, Unit 5367, will meet at 6 p.m. at Mountain View Community Recreation Center, 645 1st St., ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥. Several important items will be discussed, as we continue to plan events celebrating our 90 years as a Burke County Unit. All members are encouraged to attend. The group is still practicing social distance and healthy protocols to keep everyone safe.Â

Piedmont Palooza
Western Piedmont Community College, 1001 Burkemont Ave., ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥, will host Piedmont Palooza with a 5K at 8 a.m., a car cruise-in at 10 a.m. and campus program highlights, food trucks and activities at 11 a.m.

The Lake James Community Center, near Lake James Fire Department on N.C. 126, will have free bingo from 6-9 p.m. Hot foods including fish, fries and hot dogs will be available for purchase to eat in or to go. Door prize drawings will also be held throughout the evening. You must be present to win. The public is invited.

The Quaker Meadows Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution will dedicate a DAR/Pomeroy Foundation Revolution Series Marker at Obeth Cemetery in Lake James State Park at 2 p.m. in honor of three DAR patriots buried there: Rev. William Fullwood, Rev. John Gibbs and Lawrence Unger.
Membership tea
Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, Unit 43, will be having a Membership Tea from noon to 2 p.m. at DAV Chapter 43, 2778 DAV Ave., ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥. All members and guest are invited to attend. Those planning to attend should call 828-413-5048 no later than Monday, April 21, to help with planning food.Â
