A company planning to eliminate $10 million in debt for some western North Carolina residents has enlisted former UNC basketball coach Roy Williams to spread the news.
Verizon and ForgiveCo plan to to eliminate $10 million in consumer debt for 6,500 western North Carolinians, a news release from Verizon said. The debt relief is aimed to help people as they recover from Hurricane Helene.Â
No application was required for debt to be relieved. Instead, those impacted will get surprise letters, emails and text messages, the release said.
A lucky few may get a call from Williams, who was born in Marion in 1950.Â
In a press conference Friday, Jan. 31, at Verizon’s South Asheville store, the organizations announced all applicable debt has been forgiven. No further action is required by the beneficiaries.Â
Williams said in the release, “Verizon’s random acts of kindness will lift up thousands of North Carolinians that were left vulnerable to Hurricane Helene’s devastation. These are challenging times, but I’ve seen the strength and resilience of this community. Verizon’s support is a powerful reminder that no one is alone, and together, we’ll rise stronger. It’s a privilege to share this message of hope with the incredible people of North Carolina."
In July 2011, Williams returned to Marion to dedicate a marker in front of the Marion City Hall.Â
“Marion is where I was born in Western North Carolina and that area will always be my home,†Williams wrote in 2011. “From my cousins playing at North Cove to Dot’s Dario down towards Pleasant Gardens, that area always brings back fond memories.â€
Craig Antico, founder and CEO of ForgiveCo, said, “Unpayable debt is a heavy burden that causes hardship for countless hardworking Americans. Often triggered by sudden medical events or accidents, the impact of natural disasters can further destabilize families and limit opportunities for generations. Through this effort, Verizon will bring transformative change to the lives of North Carolinians in crisis, leaving a lasting mark on future generations.â€
