Soup and chili fundraiser
Shiloh AME Church, 1323 N. Powerhouse Road, ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥, will hold a soup and chili fundraiser in the fellowship hall from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The menu will include assorted homemade soups and chili. Purchase small or large with a choice of cornbread or crackers. Dine in or take out. Some baked goods will also be available for purchase.
Pigeon Forge day trip
Unifour Christian Ministries will be taking a day trip to Pigeon Forge, making stops at the Bush’s Beans Visitor Center, flea market, Buc-ee’s and outlet stores. Lunch will be at The Old Mill Restaurant. Everyone will pay for their own meal. The cost for the trip is $40 per person, which was due by Jan. 10. A bus will pick people up at 7 a.m. at the Granite Falls Walmart, 7:15 a.m. at Big Lots in Hickory and 7:30 a.m. at Rural King in ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥. Agricultural Recovery Fair
The Burke County Agricultural Building, 130 Ammons Drive, ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥, will host an agricultural recovery fair from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The walk-through event will provide information on addressing agricultural or rural needs not covered by standard programs offered by FEMA or the state, and opportunities for farmers, ranchers, nursery owners, vineyards, honeybee growers and fish producers to meet with agricultural officials to learn more about assistance available. Trained representatives from FEMA, the USDA, NC Department of Commerce, NC Department of Agriculture, US Small Business Administration and local Farm Service Agency officials will be present. Bring evidence of ownership or photos of damaged or lost tools and equipment along with estimated replacement costs to expedite your application.
WEDNESDAY, FEB. 5
AARP meeting
The Burke County Chapter of the AARP will meet at 9:30 a.m. in the lower level of the Collett Street Recreation Center in ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥. Refreshments and fellowship will be offered from 9:30-10 a.m., then a comprehensive overview of services available in this area will be presented by the Burke County Council on Aging. All attendees are asked to bring small, packaged snack items like cookies, crackers, nuts or candies to be given to the local hospital for distribution in waiting rooms for the clinics and ICU.

Meeting
Burke County Smart Start’s board of directors will meet at 4 p.m. at the Partnership offices, 304 W. Union St., ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥. Board meetings are open to the public and are held in handicapped accessible facilities. COVID, flu and other health restrictions will be observed. NAACP meeting
The Burke County Branch of the NAACP will meet at 6 p.m. at the Mountain View Recreation Center, 645 1st St., ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥. Final plans are being made for the annual Black History Festival, which is set for Feb. 22. The branch will also celebrate its 90th anniversary. All members are encouraged to attend. Anyone interested in running for office needs to fill out a candidates’ consent form and have it signed before the branch election. Members will be notified of the new election date once it is finalized. Social distancing and other healthy protocols will be practiced at the meeting.

Passport Fair
The Burke County Register of Deeds Office will host a Passport Fair from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event offers a one-stop shop to obtain a passport for anyone who has never gotten a passport or who has received a passport but it has been more than 15 years since the issuance date of the expired passport. A cashier’s check, money order or personal check is required for fees due to the U.S. Department of State. Appointments are recommended. Burke County Public Schools is hosting an Education Career Expo at 4:45 p.m. at Patton High School. RSVPs were due by Jan. 27 at or by calling 828-439-4323. Free hot dog supper.
